EXCLUSIVE: Fear, frustration amid Peru
mudslide disaster:

A MELBOURNE man caught in the Peru mudslides disaster described how
fear, tempers and frustration are bubbling in the resort town of Aguas
Calientes at the foot of the ancient Inca citadel Machu Picchu.

The latest official death toll has seven dead. A 23-year-old Argentine tourist
and a 33-year-old Peruvian mountain guide died on the trail, buried under
mudslides, the National Culture Institute said. The other fatalities occurred
along the valley leading to Cusco and in the town itself.

Peru's Prime Minister Javier Velasquez said 600 tourists had been
evacuated so far but almost 1500 remained locked in by heavy rains and
mudslides which have ruptured damaged rail and bridge links between
Machu Picchu and Cuzco.

There are surrounding rivers and
dams that could burst their banks.
